I may or may not have done something crazy… but my daughter wanted to do a painting birthday party with her friends, and I said let’s do it! Here’s the crazy part– my daughter just turned five… which meant that I’d have a bunch of five year olds painting in my house. My husband and I bought disposable table cloths and taped it to the floor (with painters tape) of our dining room just in case. You definitely have to be careful when setting that up, because I totally ripped the already-taped-down table cloth before the party even started! We just used more painters tape to tape it back up.
At first, I thought “well maybe I can get Hannah (my super creative sister-in-law) to draw some designs on the canvases for the kids to paint. But then I realized something better we could do that was much easier– the kids could make their own designs on their canvases with painter’s tape!

Thankfully, all the little kids were super careful about painting only on their canvas. One little boy asked Hannah how much of the table he could paint and of course she said, “um, none of it?” Haha! Even that little boy was careful and thankfully didn’t get any paint on my furniture. We also had a ton of moms standing around monitoring all of the kids painting.

The kids had such a blast painting and were super excited to remove the tape to see their designs. This theme birthday party was super easy and very low key. Honestly, the key to this party was having a small group. My daughter picked four friends (plus some siblings) to have her little party with and it was honestly perfect.
Painting Party Supplies
- Kid Aprons
- Painting Trays
- Paint Brushes
- Cups (for the water for paintbrushes– I almost forgot to put these out!)
- Paint
- Canvas Boards
- Painter’s Tape
- Table coverings (for the floor and for your table)
- Wet Ones/wipes (to get the initial paint off hands)

My daughter loved her special painting birthday party! She’s already talking about next year’s event. I just want to tell her “Slow down, my child! Let’s get through being five first.” There’s no rush on growing up.
This has been a super weird year for all of us, but I’m really glad we got to gather with some close friends for this birthday. We do life with the families and everyone was very respectful of boundaries. It really meant a lot to her to get to celebrate her birthday in a super special way.
You are one brave lady! 🙂 This sounds awesome, and I’m glad your daughter had a great birthday party….happy birthday to her!
